      Album Details

Barbara Hendricks, renowned for her extraordinary contributions to classical music, ventures into the blues with her debut blues album, "Barbara Sings the Blues." Released on September 16, 2008, under the Arte Verum label, this 56-minute collection of 13 tracks showcases Hendricks' versatility and artistry. Accompanied by the acclaimed Magnus Lindgren Quartet, Hendricks brings a fresh perspective to iconic tunes by legendary artists such as Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, and Duke Ellington.

The album opens with "Lady Sings the Blues," a nod to Billie Holiday's iconic song, and continues with a mix of classic blues and jazz standards like "Trouble in Mind," "God Bless the Child," and "Strange Fruit." Hendricks' powerful vocals and the quartet's masterful playing create a captivating blend of tradition and innovation. The album also features lesser-known gems like "Allhelgonablues," adding depth and variety to the collection.

"Barbara Sings the Blues" is not just an album; it's a testament to Hendricks' ability to transcend genres and captivate audiences with her unique voice. Whether you're a fan of blues, jazz, or classical music, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience. The collaboration with the Magnus Lindgren Quartet, known for their Swedish Grammy Award-winning work, ensures a high level of musicality and sophistication throughout the album. Hendricks' background in negro spirituals and her advocacy for peace and reconciliation add layers of depth to her interpretation of these timeless songs. This album is a celebration of Hendricks' artistic evolution and a delightful exploration of the blues genre.
