Bach: Suite Nr. 1 für Violoncello solo / Veress: Sonata - Thomas Demenga

      Album Details

Thomas Demenga's 1993 album, "Bach: Suite Nr. 1 für Violoncello solo / Veress: Sonata," is a captivating journey through the timeless works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Sándor Veress. This classical masterpiece, released under the ECM New Series label, showcases Demenga's exceptional skill and artistry as a cellist, accompanied by Hansheinz Schneeberger on the oboe and Tabea Zimmermann on the violin.

The album begins with Bach's iconic Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major, BWV 1007, a collection of six movements that demonstrate Bach's profound understanding of the cello's expressive capabilities. Demenga's performance is both technically impeccable and deeply expressive, bringing a fresh perspective to these well-loved pieces. The suite is followed by the Passacaglia concertante for Oboe and String Orchestra, where Demenga and Schneeberger deliver a powerful and nuanced interpretation of this complex and dramatic work.

The second half of the album features Veress's Sonata for Violin Solo, performed by Tabea Zimmermann. This three-movement work is a testament to Veress's unique compositional voice, blending modernist techniques with a deep respect for traditional forms. Zimmermann's playing is virtuosic and sensitive, capturing the essence of Veress's musical language.

The album concludes with two movements from Veress's Songs of the Seasons, a set of seven madrigals for mixed choir. These pieces showcase Veress's ability to create evocative and atmospheric music, even within the constraints of the madrigal form.

With a total runtime of just over an hour, this album offers a rich and varied listening experience, showcasing the talents of three exceptional musicians and the enduring power of Bach and Veress's music. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is sure to impress and inspire.
