      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the profound and sacred compositions of Reinhard Keiser's "St Mark Passion," meticulously arranged by the legendary Johann Sebastian Bach. This 1999 release, brought to you by Decca (UMO), is a masterful rendition of a work that has captivated audiences for centuries. Spanning a duration of 1 hour and 11 minutes, this album is a testament to the enduring power of Baroque music.

The "St Mark Passion" is a lost Passion setting by Bach, first performed in Leipzig on Good Friday, 23 March. This particular recording is based on the BNB I/K/2 pasticcio, which indicates the collaboration of Keiser, Bach, and Handel. The recitatives and turba choruses are largely taken from a Passion by Reinhard Keiser, a prominent composer of the time. Bach's intensive study and frequent performances of Keiser's work are evident in this stunning arrangement.

The album features a rich tapestry of chorales, recitatives, arias, and choruses, each contributing to the narrative of the Passion. Standout tracks include the hauntingly beautiful "Er kommt" (Aria, soprano) and the powerful "Mein Troster" (Aria, tenor), both of which showcase the vocal prowess of the performers. The inclusion of chorales such as "Wach auf, O Mensch" and "Ich will hier bei dir stehen" adds a deeply spiritual dimension to the work.

This recording is a rare opportunity to experience the fusion of Keiser's dramatic storytelling and Bach's unparalleled musical genius. The Cambridge Baroque Camerata, under the direction of Geoffrey Webber, brings to life the intricate details and emotional depth of this timeless masterpiece. Whether you are a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, "St Mark Passion" offers a profound and enriching listening experience.
