      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the bold and innovative world of George Antheil with his compelling album, "Antheil: Symphony No. 3 'American' & Other Works for Orchestra." Released on November 1, 2004, under the CPO label, this avant-garde masterpiece is a testament to Antheil's unique vision and musical genius. The album spans a full hour, offering a rich tapestry of compositions that showcase Antheil's distinctive style and experimental approach.

The centerpiece of the album is the Symphony No. 3 "American," a four-movement work that blends classical orchestration with a distinctly American flair. The symphony is a journey through various moods and themes, from the energetic "Allegro" to the reflective "Andante," culminating in the dynamic "Back to Baltimore. Presto." Additionally, the album features a collection of other notable works, including the lively "Tom Sawyer," the rhythmic "Hot-Time Dance," and the evocative "Capital of the World Suite," which comprises three distinct movements.

Antheil's compositions are known for their complexity and innovation, and this album is no exception. Each piece is a testament to his ability to push the boundaries of traditional orchestral music, creating a sound that is both challenging and deeply rewarding. Whether you're a seasoned fan of avant-garde music or a curious newcomer, this album offers a captivating exploration of one of the most original voices in 20th-century music.

      About George Antheil

George Antheil was a multifaceted American artist whose innovative spirit transcended the boundaries of music, literature, and invention. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1900, Antheil's avant-garde compositions in the 1920s earned him the title of a "bad boy of music," pushing the limits of what was considered acceptable in the classical music world. His works often incorporated industrial and mechanical sounds, reflecting the modernist sensibilities of the early 20th century. Antheil's time in Europe, particularly in Paris, was marked by his friendships with other avant-garde figures and his groundbreaking compositions that sometimes outpaced the technology available to perform them.

Beyond his musical pursuits, Antheil was a prolific writer, penning magazine articles, an autobiography, a mystery novel, and various columns. His inventive mind also led him to create a secret communication system used in military communications, showcasing his versatility and forward-thinking approach. Returning to the United States in the 1930s, Antheil composed music for films and television, which softened his style into more tonal compositions. His legacy as a pioneer of electronic music and a constant reinventor of his artistic persona continues to inspire those who appreciate bold, innovative art.
