      Album Details

Dive into the avant-garde world of George Antheil with "Antheil Plays Antheil," a captivating collection of his most intriguing works. Released in 2000 by Other Minds, this album spans a remarkable two hours and twenty-four minutes, offering a deep exploration into Antheil's later "neo-romantic" period. The album features a mix of solo piano pieces, orchestral works, and spoken word performances, showcasing Antheil's versatility as a composer and pianist.

The album opens with the enchanting "Valentine Waltzes," a series of eleven delicate piano pieces performed by Antheil himself. These waltzes are followed by a collection of compositions based on the poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley, where Antheil's piano work is interwoven with the evocative narration of Vincent Price. The orchestral pieces, performed by the Vienna Philharmonia Orchestra, include the dynamic "McKonkey's Ferry Overture" and the expansive "Symphony No. 5, 'Joyous,'" highlighting Antheil's ability to compose for large ensembles.

In addition to the musical performances, the album also includes rare interviews and spoken word pieces, providing a unique insight into Antheil's creative process and personal reflections. These recordings, spanning from 1942 to 1958, offer a historical perspective on Antheil's life and work, making this album not just a musical experience but also a journey through the mind of a visionary composer.

"Antheil Plays Antheil" is a testament to George Antheil's enduring legacy in the world of avant-garde music. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer to his work, this album offers a comprehensive and engaging exploration of his later compositions, making it a valuable addition to any music collection.

      About George Antheil

George Antheil was a multifaceted American artist whose innovative spirit transcended the boundaries of music, literature, and invention. Born in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1900, Antheil's avant-garde compositions in the 1920s earned him the title of a "bad boy of music," pushing the limits of what was considered acceptable in the classical music world. His works often incorporated industrial and mechanical sounds, reflecting the modernist sensibilities of the early 20th century. Antheil's time in Europe, particularly in Paris, was marked by his friendships with other avant-garde figures and his groundbreaking compositions that sometimes outpaced the technology available to perform them.

Beyond his musical pursuits, Antheil was a prolific writer, penning magazine articles, an autobiography, a mystery novel, and various columns. His inventive mind also led him to create a secret communication system used in military communications, showcasing his versatility and forward-thinking approach. Returning to the United States in the 1930s, Antheil composed music for films and television, which softened his style into more tonal compositions. His legacy as a pioneer of electronic music and a constant reinventor of his artistic persona continues to inspire those who appreciate bold, innovative art.
