      Album Details

Lem Winchester's "Another Opus" is a vibrant journey into the world of hard bop and bebop, recorded in 1960 and released under the Original Jazz Classics label. This album captures the essence of a promising jazz career that was tragically cut short. With a soulful and straight-ahead sound, Winchester's vibraphone work shines throughout the six tracks, showcasing his skill and innovation.

The album opens with "Another Opus," setting the tone for the energetic and dynamic performances that follow. "Blues Prayer" and "The Meetin'" delve into the bluesy and gospel-infused side of jazz, while "Like Someone In Love" offers a more romantic and melodic interlude. "Both Barrels" and the bonus track "Lid Flippin'" highlight Winchester's ability to blend bop with a soulful groove, featuring the organist Johnny "Hammond" Smith.

Recorded in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, the sessions capture the raw energy and spontaneity of live jazz performances. Winchester's playing is both technically impressive and deeply expressive, making "Another Opus" a standout release in his all-too-brief career. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album offers a compelling introduction to the world of hard bop and the enduring legacy of Lem Winchester.

      About Lem Winchester

Lem Winchester, born Lemuel Davis Winchester, was a vibrant force in the jazz world during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Hailing from Philadelphia, this American vibraphonist was known for his inventive style, marked by creative phrasing, adventurous solos, and a deep blues sensibility. Winchester's career was tragically cut short at the age of 32, but in his brief time, he left an indelible mark on the hard bop and bebop genres. Before his musical career took off, Winchester served as a police officer, adding a unique layer to his artistic persona. His debut album as a leader was released in 1958, and he continued to record and perform until his untimely death in 1961. Notable works include "Lem's Beat," recorded with saxophonist Oliver Nelson in 1960. Winchester's music is a testament to his immense potential and enduring legacy in the jazz community.
