Angles Of Repose - Joe Maneri

      Album Details

"Angles of Repose" is a captivating exploration into the world of free jazz, brought to life by the extraordinary talents of Joe Maneri, a visionary reed player, alongside bassist Barre Phillips and violist Mat Maneri, Joe's son. Recorded in May 2002 and released on ECM Records in June 2004, this album is a testament to the power of improvisation and the deep musical connection between its creators. The suite of ten parts, spanning over 71 minutes, was recorded in the intimate setting of a small church in France, adding a unique acoustic resonance to the performances.

Joe Maneri, known for his eccentric and innovative approach to free improvisation, continues his collaborative journey with his son Mat, a virtuoso on the viola. Together with the seasoned bassist Barre Phillips, they create a sound that is both raw and refined, pushing the boundaries of traditional jazz. This trio previously collaborated on the 1999 album "Tales of Rohnlief," and "Angles of Repose" serves as a compelling follow-up, showcasing their evolving chemistry and musical dialogue.

The album's title, "Angles of Repose," evokes a sense of balance and stillness, yet the music within is anything but static. It is a dynamic and unpredictable journey through the realms of European free jazz, where each note is a discovery and every moment is a revelation. The interplay between Maneri's reed instruments, Mat Maneri's expressive viola, and Phillips' solid bass lines creates a rich tapestry of sound that is both intellectually stimulating and deeply moving.

"Angles of Repose" is not just an album; it is an experience. It invites the listener to immerse themselves in the spontaneous and uncharted territories of free jazz, where tradition meets innovation, and every performance is a unique event. Whether you are a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a curious newcomer, this album offers a profound and rewarding listening experience that highlights the genius of Joe Maneri and his collaborators.

      About Joe Maneri

Joe Maneri was an innovative American jazz composer, saxophonist, and clarinetist, celebrated for his pioneering work in microtonal music and his significant contributions to the free jazz movement. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1927, Maneri's musical journey began in the early 1960s, though his groundbreaking work initially went unrecognized. Despite facing challenges in gaining widespread acclaim in his homeland, he became a revered figure in Europe. Known for his emotional depth and intellectual rigor, Maneri's music is a testament to his unique approach to harmony, counterpoint, and improvisation.
