      American Dreams - Charlie Haden
      American Dreams - Charlie Haden

      Album Details

Charlie Haden's "American Dreams" is a captivating journey into the world of jazz, released in January 2002 under the Universal Music Division Decca Records France label. This album, however, was recorded and released on the Verve label. This album is a testament to Haden's mastery of the bass, featuring the legendary saxophonist Michael Brecker, along with notable contributions from Brad Mehldau on piano and Brian Blade on drums. Recorded and mixed in May 2002 at Signet Soundelux in Los Angeles, and mastered in July of the same year at Sound Bunker in Darien, Connecticut, the album boasts a rich, polished sound that reflects the meticulous craftsmanship of its creators.

The album spans a generous 74 minutes, offering 13 tracks that blend elements of jazz, free jazz, and cool jazz. Haden's title composition, "American Dreams," opens the album with a folk song-like melody played over lush strings arranged by Alan Broadbent. The tracklist includes a mix of original compositions and standards, such as "Travels," "No Lonely Nights," "It Might Be You," and "America The Beautiful," showcasing the band's versatility and depth. Haden's bass playing is a standout feature, providing a steady, melodic foundation that allows Brecker's sax to soar and the rhythm section to shine.

"American Dreams" is a celebration of American music and culture, with each track offering a unique perspective on the jazz tradition. From the hauntingly beautiful "Nightfall" to the upbeat "Young And Foolish," the album explores a wide range of moods and styles. The inclusion of standards like "America The Beautiful" and "Love Like Ours" alongside original compositions demonstrates the band's respect for the past while pushing the boundaries of the genre. The album's cover art, featuring a vintage American flag, hints at the patriotic themes and nostalgic feel that permeate the music.

For jazz enthusiasts and casual listeners alike, "American Dreams" offers a rich, rewarding listening experience. The album's blend of classic and contemporary elements, along with the exceptional playing of its contributors, makes it a standout release in Charlie Haden's discography. Whether you're a fan of traditional jazz or more experimental styles, there's something in this album for everyone.

      About Charlie Haden

Charlie Haden, born Charles Edward Haden in 1937, was a pioneering American jazz double bass player, bandleader, composer, and educator whose influence spans over five decades. Haden is renowned for his groundbreaking work with saxophonist Ornette Coleman in the late 1950s, where he helped to define the free jazz movement. His innovative approach to bass playing revolutionized the instrument's role in jazz, often moving independently of the soloist and liberating bassists from traditional accompanying roles. Haden's versatility allowed him to master a wide range of jazz styles, drawing from his country music roots. Notable collaborations include his work with Keith Jarrett, resulting in the acclaimed albums "Jasmine" and "Last Dance." Haden's legacy continues to inspire, celebrated for his extraordinary vision and ability on the double bass.
