      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, romantic soundscapes of Hugo Alfvén's Symphony No. 5, a masterpiece that showcases the composer's enduring legacy in Swedish classical music. This album, released in 2007 by Naxos, features the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Niklas Willén, delivering a powerful and nuanced performance of Alfvén's Fifth Symphony in A Minor, Op. 54. The symphony, a product of two decades of work, is notable for its traditional structure, including exposition repeats in the first and last movements, offering a sense of familiarity and depth.

The album opens with the dramatic "Lento - Allegro non troppo," followed by the serene "Andante," the intense "Lento - Allegro - Presto molto agitato," and concludes with the energetic "Finale. Allegro con brio." Additionally, the album includes the enchanting "Uppenbarelsekantat (Revelation Cantata), Op. 31: Andante religioso," a short but captivating piece scored for harp, celesta, and strings, composed in 1913.

Hugo Alfvén, a versatile artist known for his contributions as a musician, writer, and watercolorist, is celebrated in Sweden as a pivotal figure in classical music following Franz Berwald. This album is a testament to his enduring influence and the timeless beauty of his compositions. With a total duration of 57 minutes, it offers a comprehensive exploration of Alfvén's symphonic genius, making it a valuable addition to any classical music enthusiast's collection.
