      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich, late Romantic and post-Romantic sounds of Hugo Alfvén, a Swedish composer whose music beautifully blends Scandinavian elements with the grandeur of the era. This album, released in 2005 under the Naxos label, showcases two of Alfvén's notable works: his Symphony No. 4 in C Minor, Op. 39, subtitled "Från havsbandet" (From the Outer Skerries), and the vibrant Festival Overture, Op. 52.

The Symphony No. 4, composed in 1919, is a four-movement masterpiece that captures the essence of the Swedish archipelago's rugged beauty and serene landscapes. The first movement, "Moderato - Allegretto, ma non troppo," sets a contemplative tone, while the second movement, "Allegro - Moderato - Allegro," introduces a lively and dynamic rhythm. The third movement, "Lento - Maestoso - Molto appassionato," is a deeply expressive and passionate piece, leading into the final movement, "Allegro agitato," which concludes the symphony with a sense of urgency and energy.

Complementing the symphony is the Festival Overture, Op. 52, composed in 1944. This piece is a celebration of festivity and joy, characterized by its bright and spirited melodies. Performed by the Iceland Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Niklas Willén, this album offers a captivating exploration of Alfvén's musical genius. With a total duration of 58 minutes, it's a compelling listen for anyone interested in the rich tapestry of early 20th-century Scandinavian music.
