      About Erling Blöndal Bengtsson

Erling Blöndal Bengtsson, born in Copenhagen in 1932, was a renowned Danish cellist whose musical journey captivated audiences worldwide. Hailing from a musical family—with a Danish violinist father and an Icelandic pianist mother—Bengtsson's prodigious talent was evident from a young age, debuting publicly in 1936. His studies with the legendary Gregor Piatigorsky at the Curtis Institute further honed his craft, leading to a distinguished career that spanned Europe, the USA, South America, and the former Soviet Union. Bengtsson's collaborations with major orchestras and his profound interpretations of classical repertoire, particularly works by Bach, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms, solidified his status as a master of the cello. Beyond his performing career, Bengtsson was also a dedicated educator, serving as a professor emeritus of cello at the University of Michigan School of Music. His legacy endures as a testament to his artistic brilliance and pedagogical influence.
