      Album Details

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of 20th-century classical music with the Alban Berg Quartett's "20th Century Masterpieces." This extensive compilation, released in 2008 under Warner Classics, is a testament to the ensemble's virtuosity and versatility. Spanning a generous 3 hours and 51 minutes, the album features 36 tracks that showcase a diverse range of compositions from some of the most influential composers of the century.

The Alban Berg Quartett, renowned for their precision and expressive depth, delivers captivating performances of works by composers such as Berg, Bartók, Stravinsky, Piazzolla, and Schnittke. The album opens with a unique arrangement of Strauss II's "Kaiser-Walzer" by Schoenberg, setting the stage for a journey through various styles and moods. From the intense and dramatic to the delicate and introspective, each piece is a masterclass in chamber music.

Highlights include Berg's own "String Quartet, Op. 3," a deeply personal work that reflects the composer's unique voice, and Bartók's "String Quartet No. 6," known for its intricate rhythms and harmonies. Stravinsky's "3 Pieces for String Quartet" and "Concertino for String Quartet" offer a glimpse into his innovative approach to composition, while Piazzolla's "5 Tango Sensations" bring a touch of Argentine passion and rhythm.

The album also features live recordings, such as Schnittke's "String Quartet No. 4," performed at the Vienna Konzerthaus in 1990, adding an extra layer of authenticity and energy. The inclusion of Berio's "Notturno (Quartetto III)," recorded live in 1994, further underscores the ensemble's ability to captivate audiences with their live performances.

"20th Century Masterpieces" is not just a collection of pieces; it's a comprehensive exploration of the evolution of string quartet music throughout the 20th century. Whether you're a seasoned classical music enthusiast or a newcomer looking to explore the genre, this album offers a rewarding and enriching listening experience. The Alban Berg Quartett's impeccable playing and deep understanding of these works make this a standout release in their discography.
